Nano Days

Since Thanksgiving falls on a volunteer day, I said I'd help on Tuesday for a Nano Day Event. Each year, SciWorks hosts this event to teach high schoolers about Nanotechnology - the study of things on a microscopic level.

I was asked to demo how nature affects Nanotechnology with two fascinating examples.

First, I had this little buddy to keep me company. :)

Did you know that geckos have inspired non-glue adhesives because of the microscopic hairs on their feet?

The second example was how liquid-resistant fabric was inspired by leaves that repel water due to their waxy surfaces. I demoed this feature by pouring water on both fabrics to show the difference. To be honest, I felt just like the sham-wow! guy. All I needed was one of those head mics!

So for those that own stain-resistant clothes, you have leaves to thank!
